Memorial Day 2011

Mr. Goldstein Teaches 6th Graders About Memorial Day

Mr. Goldstein is our 7th grade social studies teacher here at TEMS and he is a soldier in the US ARMY RESERVES. He came to our 6th grade classes to talk about Memorial Day.

When you think of Memorial Day you think of fun, no school, and other stuff. But, did you know this holiday has more meaning then just fun?  Mr. Goldstein told us that the reason for Memorial Day is to honor all the lost soldiers who will not be celebrating Memorial Day with their loved ones.

Mr. Goldstein also taught us about how to hang the American flag properly.  He told us to please put our flags so the stars are facing in the top left hand corner. He also said that on Monday, at 3:00 PM we should observe one minute in a moment of silence to honor all the families who lost loved ones. He also told us when we hear TAPS to put our right hand on our heart and face the flag or the music.  He also mentioned that you should not ask a soldier “Did you shoot someone?” or “Did you see someone die?” But instead to say “What are your favorite memories?” or “What are your worst memories?” He also mentioned if possible to go to a soldier’s grave and put flowers (poppies are preferred).

This is what Memorial Day is about.
